KY Fish & Wildlife Thoroughbred Bass Program

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife has identified genetic markers linked to larger largemouth bass, marking a major step toward improving bass size across the state.

Through the Thoroughbred Bass Program, biologists plan to selectively breed Kentucky-native bass with these traits to increase trophy potential in public waters.

Unlike southern states that rely on Florida bass, this approach keeps fish adapted to Kentucky’s climate while improving size over time.

Researchers analyzed over 300 bass statewide, comparing large fish (5+ lbs) to smaller ones to isolate the genetics tied to growth. The goal is to stock future generations of bass with a higher chance of reaching trophy size.

While initial stocking was planned for 2026, delays mean breeding is now expected to begin in 2027. In the meantime, biologists will continue collecting and testing bass across the state.

This program could significantly impact fishing at Rough River and other Kentucky lakes in the coming years.
