Why Fishing Improves as Soon as the Ice Melts

Seasonal observations from the Rough River Lake Living newsletter.

When ice leaves the lake, oxygen levels in the water rise and fish begin to come out of cold-weather survival mode.

Their metabolism increases, which means they need to eat more often after weeks of limited activity. At the same time, the food chain starts to wake back up, drawing baitfish and predators into predictable areas like channel edges, creek mouths, and deeper structure.

With very little fishing pressure this time of year, fish behave more naturally and are easier to catch, which is why anglers often see a noticeable improvement in fishing as soon as open water returns.
